...that you're doing too much and you need to slow down, you've got to cut some things out.

For that reason I'm not going to be posting on The Money Herder for a while. I need to sort out my schedule and start enjoying my family more.

So, please forgive me for not keeping up with The Money Herder. I may only be gone for another month or it may be many months. I can't really tell what the future holds for this blog. But, I know that right now I just do not have the time to really make it a worthy place.

Buy 10 participating Kellogg's products and Kellogg's will send you a $10 rebate! There are tons of deals out there that make this rebate offer totally awesome! Like the one at Target, or the deal at Publix this week.

Go here to get more details and to print off your rebate form. Make sure to read the rebate form completely to make sure you know the rules.

This rebate is good on products purchased between 7/6/09 and 9/30/09. Your rebate must be postmarked by 9/30/09 and received by 10/9/09.

1 rebate per address or household.

Also, it says on the rebate that all items have to be on one receipt but if you write the company you'll get an email stating that you don't necessarily have to have them on one receipt, just as long as you include receipts totally 1o qualifying items. Also, the use of coupons does not change the validation! Yippee!

Winn-Dixie this week, June 3rd through June 9th, is pretty decent. There are some good stock up deals.
Many areas got a $5 off $30 coupon. We did in Milton, FL but I'm not sure of the exact rules since I don't have a paper copy of the flier. If you know whether it's before or after coupons let me know - I don't remember from last time. Also, can you use more than one per card? Any info would be helpful.

Cook in batches. Make a full weeks meals in a few hours one day. You can do this bi weekly or monthly too. Read how we prepared a month’s worth of meals in 3 hours and then create a meal cooking schedule that will work for your family. You can do this for breakfast, lunch, and dinner if you want . This can save a ton of money! Having dinner already prepared and ready to heat and eat can keep you from eating out last minute. It also gives your grocery shopping more of a purpose. There is less tossing whatever into the cart when you have a specific meal cooking day planned with a grocery list to follow.

Utilize CVS and/or Walgreens saving programs. I have more toothpastes and tooth brushes, soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions, Tylenol, etc… than I know what to do with and I got most, if not all of it for free. I literally do not have space to store it all. Not only does this save my family money, but I have the ability to donate items to others who aren’t so fortunate, as well.

Today's Daily Savings Tip is:

Get a bread maker if you don’t have one already. If you have one - use it! Of course, you can always make bread by hand but if time is not always on your side the bread maker is a definite help. We have had two, both purchased used, both worked like a champ. The one I have now was found at a thrift store for only $13! It is a top of the line one, too. We eat bread with most of our meals. The fact that the bread is homemade and I include wheat flour in it helps fill us up and keeps us from going for seconds. I also like knowing that it is healthy without any added sugars or other unnecessary ingredients.
I have 7 children and I have noticed that homemade bread does fill them up faster than store bought loaves. If you're looking to save money this could help quite a bit.

Oh yes. It was a good week indeed. The entire picture above cost about $54. I shopped Target and then made my way over to Publix. We skipped every other store this week because I wanted to sink the weeks grocery funds into the awesome stock up deals. I have to say that I'm more than pleased with my goodies!

21 boxes of cereal (Raisin Bran & Mini Wheats were the main ones, too!)

It was a stock up week to remember! The total before store sales (Publix and Target combined) was around $285 (I didn't do the exact math, just estimated). After Publix's buy one get one free sale it was down to just under $200 and with my coupons it came down to around $54.

I just ran across this cracker deal at Publix that's only good through tomorrow. I am seriously baffled by it and am trying to wrap my head around it. Here is what I've got.

Today's Daily Savings Tip is:

Instead of eating out plan fun pizza making nights at home with your family. Tortillas work great for this! Creating personal pizzas on tortillas is a lot of fun for the little guys! Setting aside a little money for soda water and flavored syrup (like Toranis) can make a lot of fun for very little money! The syrup goes a long way and can be saved for the next family night. Add in a game or a favorite movie checked out from the library and you have a perfect, inexpensive and special evening!

How much does this save? Eating out costs no less than $60 for our large family. However, with smart shopping I can pick up the makings for a special, fun dinner for less than $10. That's a $50 savings!

Pretty good!

Today's Daily Savings Tip is:

Eat less meat. Americans have way oversized meat portions. I’d even suggest try going meatless one night a week! We have found that garbonzo beans are delicious as well as rice to take the temporary replacement of meat. We wouldn’t do this every night but we do enjoy the challenge once a week. My husband greatly enjoys my meatless stew with its large chunks of potatoes.
How much can you save by doing this for a year? Since meat costs more than twice the amount of rice or beans, and we eat no meat 52 days out of the year, we do save quite a bit - 52 meals with meat cost us over $100 for just the meat alone. But when we use rice or beans instead that cost goes down to less than $50.

Pretty good savings!

Wash out your plastic storage bags after using them or go to washable containers with lids instead. Glass containers with tight fitting lids are great and you can get them in freezer safe, microwave and oven safe varieties. Imagine the ease of going straight from the fridge or freezer to the oven without any waste like foil or baggies!
Glass containers do cost a bit more than plastic but they definitely hold up through years and years of use if you can keep them out of your toddler's hands.

How much can you save by doing this for a year? This really depends on the size of your family and how many bags you go through. We freeze everything in freezer bags and use the smaller bags for prepared, frozen meats and veggies. Washing out our baggies probably saves us somewhere around $5 a month, maybe more. That's about $60 a year.

Your Daily Savings Tip - 5/4/2009

Today's Daily Savings Tip is:

Make your own detergents!

Dish detergent -
Equal parts borax, baking soda, & regular cheap powder detergent (we get the dollar tree stuff). Use one tablespoon in each compartment per load. You don't have to add in the regular detergent. We like to use regular detergent and make it go farther by adding in the borax and baking soda. You can also put vinegar in your rinse compartment!

Laundry detergent -
Hot water
½ cup Washing Soda
¼ cup Borax
½ Soap bar (Fels or Ivory. Castile bars like Dr. Bronners work well, too)
½ to 1 tsp essential oils for scent (if desired)

Grate the soap and stir into hot water in a pot. Stir it over low to medium heat until the soap is fully dissolved.
Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full with very hot water. Add the borax, the washing soda, essential oils (if desired) and the melted soap. Stir well until everything is dissolved then add enough hot water to fill the bucket to the top.

You can either leave this mix in the bucket with the lid tightly in place or you can pour it into old detergent bottles. Remember to always mix your detergent or shake the bottle before you use it. 1 cup per load in a top loader, ¼ to ½ cup per load in a front loader. If you have hard water you may want to add in a little lemon juice every so often, too.

How much can you save by doing this? The above laundry recipe costs about a penny a load. Compare that to a bulk buy of Tide detergent at about 3 cents per load, or the average bottle at a grocery store at about 8 cents per load and you have a terrific savings! Especially if you do 90 to 100 loads a month like my family of 9.

We really love Cheerios. Not so much as a cereal, although it is good that way too, but we like to make cereal bars with them. It makes a box of cereal go a very long way. Here is a good large family recipe for Cheerios bars.

1 3/4 cup honey
1/4 cup sugar
1 cup softened butter
1 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup milk
2 Tablespoons water
3 Tablespoons vanilla
2 eggs
3 cups whole wheat flour
2 1/4 cups oatmeal
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
8 cups Cheerios
2 cups raisins (or other fruit)

Mix together honey, sugar, butter, peanut butter, milk, water, vanilla, and eggs. Then, mix together dry ingredients (except Cheerios and Raisins). Pour the dry ingredients in with the wet mix and blend thoroughly. Then, gently add your Cheerios and raisins.
With greased fingers take half the mixture and put it in a greased 9x13 baking dish - pressing down firmly. Bake it at 375 for about 14 minutes or until golden brown. Take the rest of the mix and do the same thing. You can also make Cheerios muffins using the same technique but with a muffin pan.
Your kids will love 'em!

I don't shop at Food World. Their prices have always seemed a bit high to me. However, tomorrow, Saturday April 18th, Food World is having a triple coupon day and will triple coupons up to $.55 - meaning a $.55 coupon would be worth $1.65!

I don't know what Food World's coupon policy is. I don't know if they take internet printables or not but I can offer you this bit of information:
You can use up to 10 like coupons (one coupon per item)
You must have a Food World shopping card to maximize your savings
They will only double or triple coupons that are $.55 or less.

Coupon Policy - Publix

Here is the 'unofficial' coupon policy for Publix. A heartfelt thank you goes to nrpeace17 at Hot Coupon World for compiling this information for us! These are actual answers from the Publix Corporate office.

Q: Does Publix double coupons?
A: Only in select areas: Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee, but not in Florida. Doubling only applies to manufacturer's coupons, not store or competitor coupons. They double coupons valued at $0.50 and below. Publix does not limit the number of like coupons that you can double, although the individual store can place limits as they deem necessary. Publix will not double manufacturer coupons that state, "do not double."

Q: Does Publix take printable coupons?
A: Yes, Publix accepts "cents off" printable coupons. Publix does not accept printable coupons for a free item. That is, a coupon such as "Free box of XYZ cereal."

Q: Does Publix issue store coupons?
A: Publix issues a large number of store coupons. Every two weeks a new Advantage Buy flier is published. These fliers contain store coupons, manufacturer's coupons, and advertisements for month-long sales. Publix also publishes other coupon booklets throughout the year. You may use one Publix coupon and one manufacturer's coupon per item, unless either coupon explicitly prohibits it.

Q: Does Publix take competitor coupons?
A: Yes they do. Check with your store's customer service desk to find out their policy, ask who they consider to be competitors. Some store will only take coupons from other grocery stores while others (fewer) will also accept drug store coupons. Competitor's coupons are treated like store coupons. They will not double and can be used in conjunction with a manufacturer's coupon, but not in conjunction with a store coupon.

Q: Does Publix take expired coupons?
A: No.

Q: May I use two coupons for a BOGO sale?
A: Yes, if you buy two items during a buy one, get one free sale, you may use the same combination of store and manufacturer coupons that you could use when buying the two items when not on sale. In other words, you're still buying two products even though one is "free".

Q: May I use a BOGO coupon on a BOGO sale?
A: YMMV, this varies by store. Some stores will ring up items for half price during a BOGO sale; others will ring up the items as full price for the first item and $0 for the second item. If the items are normally $4 and your store rings each item as $2, your BOGO coupon will get you two items for $2. If your store rings the first item at full price and the second at $0, your BOGO coupon will get you two free items.

Q: Are there limits on the number of coupons I can use?
A: Publix does not have a specific policy limiting coupons. The register is programmed to require a manager's approval when the coupons total over $50. The register is also programmed to accept no more coupons (store and manafucturer together) than items. If you are using a store and a manufacturer coupon for every item in your cart, you will need manager intervention. As with any store, individual store managers may refuse to accept any coupons they deem suspicious.

Q: I forgot to use one of my coupons. Can I get an adjustment?
A: There is no official policy on this, but if you ask at the Customer Service desk, they are likely to make the adjustment.

Coupon Policy - Walgreens

This is the policy emailed to those who request Walgreen's coupon policy as of April 14th.

Walgreens issued coupons are accepted
Manufacturer issued coupons are accepted

Per the following guidelines:

We will accept one Walgreen's issued coupon and one manufacturer coupon for the same item, unless either coupon prohibits such use.
"Walgreens" Roto Ad coupons, IVC (Instant Value Coupon) coupons, and a manufacturer’s coupon can be used towards the purchase of any one item.
Walgreens does not provide cash back if a coupon is presented for more than the purchase value of the item.
Walgreens does not accept coupons from other retailers or coupons for products not carried in our stores.
All valid coupons must be presented to the cashier at the time of sale.
When purchasing a Buy 1 Get 1 free item, only one coupon can be applied towards the purchase because the customer is only purchasing one item.
If a coupon states "good on any size of the product" and does not specifically exclude trail sizes of this product, the coupon can be used to purchase trial sized products.
Walgreens does not accept expired coupons.

Coupon Policy - Walmart

Walmart: print (Walmart employees and managers don't always know or understand Walmart's official coupon policies. It is a good idea to carry a copy of it with you.)

Wal-Mart accepts the following types of coupons (see guidelines below):

Manufacturer coupons (Cents Off)
Free merchandise (or manufacturer's Buy-One-Get-One-Free) coupons
Store coupons
Pharmacy (Advertising and Promotional) coupons
Internet coupons
Soft drink container caps

The following are guidelines and limits:

Wal-Mart only accepts coupons for merchandise we sell and only when presented at the time of purchase.
Coupons should have an expiration date and be presented within the valid dates. Wal-Mart will not accept expired coupons.
Internet coupons should be legible and say "Manufacturer Coupon." There should be a valid remit address for the manufacturer and a scannable bar code.
Only one coupon per item is permitted.
Use of 40 or more coupons per transaction will require approval by Customer Service Manager.

Unlike most other stores, individual Walmart stores are not allowed to modify Walmart's official coupon policy. Walmarts policy is across the board. If a Walmart tries to refuse your printables just show them their policy. This almost always corrects the situation. If it doesn't a kind phone call to Walmart's corporate office at 1-800-WALMART (1-800-925-6278) will solve the issue.

Coupon Policy - CVS

CVS does not release their official coupon policy to the public but they do offer this information.

One manufacturer coupon can be used with a CVS coupon
Internet manufacturer coupons are accepted
Printed CVS coupons can only be used for the card it was bar coded for by the person it was emailed to.
CVS internet printables are not to be shared.
Expired coupons are not accepted
Each store is permitted to vary slightly in their coupon acceptance terms

Coupon Policy - The Military Commissary

This is the official coupon policy for the commissary as found on the Commissary website as of April 14th, 2009.

Do commissaries accept coupons?
Yes. Commissaries accept most types of coupons as part of purchase transactions in accordance with the terms and conditions stated on a coupon.

Commissaries CANNOT accept "in-house" coupons issued by commercial grocery stores or supermarkets.

Patrons who wish to use coupons as part of a purchase transaction must buy the item(s) indicated on a coupon, and-except in foreign overseas areas-must use a coupon prior to or on the expiration date stated on a coupon.

Commissaries located in foreign overseas areas accept coupons up to six months after the expiration date stated on a coupon.

Do commissaries ever have "double coupon" or "triple coupon" promotions like those offered by commercial stores?

No. The "double" or "triple" coupon promotions offered by commercial stores
involve doubling, tripling (or otherwise increasing) the face value of a coupon.
Commercial stores who offer these types of promotions get paid by the coupon
issuer only for the face value of a coupon, and have to absorb the costs of
"doubling" or "tripling" coupon face value in their pricing and profit structure.

Because commissaries are required by law to sell goods at prices set only high enough to cover the cost of those goods, commissaries make no profit from which to pay the costs associated with "double" coupon promotions.

Additionally, DeCA cannot use funds provided for the operation of commissaries to support such promotions, because law strictly prescribes the uses of these funds, and "promotional support" is not among the allowable uses of these funds.

Commissaries do occasionally offer a different type of "double coupon" promotion than described above. For these promotions, manufacturers or other coupon issuers agree that commissaries may accept more than one coupon on the purchase of an item, and usually supply large numbers of coupons to patrons in the commissary in support of such promotions. These "double coupon" promotions involve doubling the number of coupons accepted on the purchase of an item, but DO NOT involve doubling (or otherwise increasing) the face value of a coupon.

May I use coupons in combination on the purchase of an item in a commissary?
"No, customers may use only one coupon per item in DeCA commissaries. Even coupons without "exclusionary language," such as "NOT TO BE USED WITH ANY OTHER COUPON," "NOT TO BE USED WITH ANY OTHER OFFER," "ONE COUPON PER PURCHASE," etc. , may not be used in combination on the purchase of an item. This policy is in line with the policies of other DoD resale activities and our commercial counterparts."

Can I use coupons generated from the Internet in a commissary?
Yes, commissaries gladly accept Internet or home-printed coupons provided they meet the following requirements - the coupons must have a typical barcode and Product Identification Number (PIN) or GS1 DataBar. A Dot Scan Barcode may appear below the expiration date, but is only required if stated on the coupon, e.g., "Do not accept without a Dot Scan Barcode below the expiration date." Internet coupons cannot be accepted for free products, however, "Buy One Get One Free" coupons are acceptable if they meet
all other requirements.

This isn't on their website but I have learned that the commissary does allow overage. As a matter of fact, the supervisor at my local commissary said they were required to issue overage in situations where the item's price is less than the coupons value.

Monthly Menu Making 4/8/2009

We Are That Family hosts a weekly Wednesday blog carnival called Worked For Me Wednesday. I have always loved reading the overwhelming amount of tips but I have never actually left one of my own. So, here is a great idea that I have let slide for a while but really loved a while back when we were consistent with it.

I have decided, upon request of my husband, that I would get back into monthly menu planning. Not only is this a great way to save money, but it is also a beautiful way to streamline meal making in our home. I remember when we did menu planning a couple years ago and it really did make everything easier. Now that we have a family of 9 it seems even more like a no-brainer to reorganize myself in this area.

Sure, it takes a little time and effort but that is short lived and then everything else is easier. With a large family like mine it takes twice the food to feed us. This has hit our grocery budget hard but we have found ways to get around that. Couponing and deal hunting has certainly helped but I know if I could get myself organized enough to start meal planning again I could cut even more money off our already low monthly budget.

Since I have done this before I know exactly what goes into it. Here is a short rundown of how I do monthly meal planning.
I run week by week here. I'll make a different food for each meal each day for one week. Then, we start back over with the same rotation the next week. This goes on for one month and when the next month starts there is an entirely new weekly menu. For us this works best while your monthly meal plan might look a little different. The key is to make a plan and stick with it.

Making my menu takes about 30 minutes. I sit down with my favorite large family cookbook and write out what we'll have for breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day for one week. Then, that week's menu is used for each week in the month.
While creating my menu I take a few things into consideration.

What do I have already stocked in my cupboard
What can I buy for cheap
What does my family like or dislike
Nutritional value (we try to stay away from a lot of white sugar)
Can it be made ahead of time and be kept in the freezer
Preparation time

Here is my meal plan for April. I am a week behind but it won't take much to get caught up.

Breakfast
Monday - baked oatmeal (freezable)
Tuesday - Pannu Kakku (freezable)
Wednesday - Pancakes (we'll be mixing 5 gallons of dry mix up ahead of time)
Thursday - Peanut Butter Granola

Monday - Mashed potatoes and crock pot chili (can be made ahead and frozen)
Tuesday - Spaghetti w/ homemade garlic bread (sauce and bread can be mixed ahead of time)
Wednesday - Chicken & Corn Chowder with buttered pasta (can be made ahead and frozen)
Thursday - Hamburger Soup and rice (can be made ahead and frozen)
Friday - Cream of Chicken Casserole (can be made ahead and frozen
Saturday - Chicken Soup with home made dinner rolls (can be made ahead and frozen)
Sunday - meatless soup started in the crock pot in the AM

I like to cook all my like meats at once. Then, I separate the meat into zip top bags along with the other ingredients like veggies and spices for that meal. I prepare any rice and pasta on the day of - I don't feel this stuff freezes as well as other things. I have a special relationship with my crock pot and like to use it all the time.

I have written before on cooking a month's worth of meals at once here. Although that system is a little different than what I've written here about cooking a month's worth of meals in one day here and it has still served us well on many occasions, as well.

There's nothing like saying, "Go look at the menu" whenever one of my kidlets asks for the 10th time, "what are we having for dinner?".
